Turtle Dance at Taos Pueblo

I alarm at 6:15AM, outside it's - 15 degrees underneath zero, still diminish outside. I'm not precisely arranged to leave until pulling on an a few pants over my jeans, this must be the coldest day ever here in Taos, New Mexico. Today is the first of the new year when Taos Pueblo has it's stately Turtle Dance, which will begin at sunrise. Intending to land to see this administration begin, I'm off towards the Blue Mountain covered in a fresh front of snow, it's daylight yet the sun has not peaked itself over the mountain yet, there's still time...

Quickly I arrive and stop the auto in the essential visitor part, closest to the section, not very many people here, and I don't hear anything yet. Planning to hear the beat of a not exceptionally far away drum, it's the adapted shake I hear. Walking around the byway to the Plaza, it's begun before the Taos Pueblo Church a line of forty revealed chested men, singing a low rambled mumble of the Tiwa vernacular moving sensitive walks in the squeaking snow underneath their feet. Each hold a gourd shake painted white with bows of evergreen collapsed over the handle. A lone Turtle shell shake settling to a leg and various sleigh ringers collapsed over each lower leg, most have sewed white tights, all wearing standard kilts of Monks material and a combination of plans. A cap of Parrot, Hawk, and Eagle plumes upgrades the back of each craftsman head, a white stripe of soil painted under each catch which is separate into a checkered section. Became flushed chests look sunburned, yet the sun has still to climb over the mountain. The drummer was using an old drum fairly greater than what I have a photograph of here, it was solicited in what looked like the conceal of a Buffalo with an awesome piece of the hair still affixed.

There may be 12-15 guests seeing this administration when I at first get in contact, in just a hour there are at present 50-60 visitors. The breath of the person nearby me pounds me over with vapor from the alcohol exhausted the previous evening. Taos Pueblo ladies are in the primary section of onlookers wrapped by excellent Pendleton covers, attempting to keep warm and trade their thoughts and petitions to the men moving. It must work for the men aren't keeling over having turned blue with cool and frostbite. Beyond anyone's ability to see all around the court, Taos Pueblo Priests (caciques) watch over the administration and the spectators. A critical number of the more established people I know are not a single place in sight, perhaps seeing from rooftops or holding up in the Kivas.

Today is in like manner the trading of the Lincoln Cane and Governor's Cane to the present year's new Pueblo Governor and new administering body. The administration for which occurs toward the night. If you missed the Turtle Dance and can witness this give watchful thought to the sticks, they are a bit of the living history of the towns known as Pueblos.

Sticking this association into your program will empower you to hear a practically identical song to Taos Pueblo of the Turtle Dance from San Juan Pueblo. It is said that the turtle move work started from the all inclusive community of Laguna Pueblo through to Isleta Pueblo, to San Juan Pueblo by then to Taos Pueblo in the mid 1800's. Some person once uncovered to me that the Taos Blue Lake is in like manner called the Turtle Lake. The turtle in various social orders is a basic picture now and again outlining a lake or conduit, sometimes of Mother Earth.

It had been quite a while since I'd last been to the Turtle Dance here. We went to Taos for the thousand years 1999-2000, just a couple more spectators at the capacity that new year. On that day it began to snow, a fragile light snow, a bird of prey drifting over head affected me to feel the welcome of Taos Mountain charming us to remain. Several years sometime later we moved here forever, thank you Taos Mountain for enduring us. Much gratitude to you to the all inclusive community of Taos Pueblo for empowering us to be onlookers at this magnificent blessing.
